Review of the smartphone Xiaomi Redmi 6A - tests, disassembly and attempt to find a replacement for the lost IR port

The device is well studied by the user and reviewers,but I sure have something to add. As in my previous review, everything will be very detailed (as far as my knowledge and experience allow), so you can go under the cut, if, of course, you are not tired of Xiaomi’s smartphones
Observed smartphone received as a prize forFirst place in the review competition (on another site), but I know exactly where it was purchased. The fact is that the story about my copy has already been published online, moreover in September 2018. True, this story was written by another person. Generally, there are plenty of Redmi 6A reviews on the Internet, but I decided that I could add new information by conducting additional tests that no one else, as far as I know, did.

Unfortunately, not all smartphone models getlogical development, and sometimes I see that new devices basically just lose interesting features. This happens, in my opinion, with the budget series Redmi A. Judge for yourself, the transition from 4A to 5A did not give any visible improvements (if we proceed from what is written in the specifications), but in the top five the battery was slightly trimmed, the gyroscope was removed and the LED was made event notifying, dim and monochrome.
In model 6A, I observe that the manufacturer has removed the IR port - very important, by the way, for some users. However, I will try to find a way out of this situation, but the details a little later
And the most interesting question for me. How will Xiaomi work on MTK now? Is this a one-off “action” or the beginning of a long partnership? Of course, I don’t know the plans of the companies, but I think I can test the new processor. So, proceed to the review.

True, this is without taking into account the various coupons, and in addition to Aliexpress in China there are other trading platforms that often offer lower prices for various products.

Since this is Xiaomi, then with accessories and zap. parts of the problem usually does not occur. Covers so, probably, in Chinese stores you can choose almost infinitely.
4. Package

The power supply stably holds a load of 1.21 A, but still with a stretch copes with a current of 1.22 A. At higher rates, significant voltage sags begin immediately.
At room temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, the power supply heats up to about 39 degrees in 50 minutes of charging the smartphone.

MicroUSB cable, judging by the voltage loss,very suitable for charging. With a load of 2 A, the tester shows 5.11 V, while without a cable it produces 5.43 V (for the tests, the power supply unit that came with the Neffos C9 smartphone was used).

5. Appearance

I will use the photo already shown by me in another review for comparing sizes with some other smartphones:

The Bluboo D6 is slightly smaller in length, but, on the other hand, the Xiaomi is thinner, and that, not least, Redmi 6A, unlike Bluboo, can be called a smartphone
The front side of the smartphone is a display withrounded black frames (at some viewing angles you can see that the matrix itself has sharp angles), above which you can see the camera, the speaker, the sensors and the LED indicator (right-to-left). The main difference from the previous Redmi Series A is the lack of touch buttons under the screen, as well as a more elongated display.
On the left side - two trays for Nano-SIM cardsand microSD. Recently, more and more budget smartphones are again being able to work simultaneously with two SIM cards and a memory card, without gluing together a so-called “sandwich”. However, this concerns the global version of Redmi 6A, whereas in the Chinese one will have to choose between additional memory and the possibility of installing a second SIM card. Or, again, try making “sandwiches”.

The top face is a 3.5 mm jack and a microphone hole. At the bottom is a microUSB connector and another hole for the microphone.

On the back of the unit is visible with a camera and the upper part, as well as holes for the speaker in the bottom. Below, near the speaker, there is no protrusion that was in Redmi 4A and 5A, and which did not allow the sound to completely overlap when the smartphone was lying on some surface with the screen facing up. Perhaps the newer model has no need for a projection, because it has a bulging unit with a camera, which, by the way, is not bad at scratching. I would prefer to wear a smartphone in a case or bumper, and it is a pity that the package does not have anything like that.

The plastic thickness of the back cover is 1,057 mm.
The weight of the back cover is 14.3 grams.
The camera, relative to the body, protrudes approximately 0.96 mm. It feels more than 4A, which I once visited. But at that time I did not use a caliper.
There are no fingerprints on the lid, andit feels strong. I see the blue color of the case as successful - the device looks more interesting than its “brothers”, which are painted in standard gold and black colors.
The smartphone is comfortable in the hand and does not slip. There is no operating mode in gloves.
The LED indicator is dim and it canshine only white light. The indicator lights up during charging and goes out after the moment the smartphone has dialed 100%. In the event of missed events, the indicator lights up every 1.08 seconds, gradually lighting up and extinguishing. The duration of the glow is 3.14 seconds.

6. Display
The viewing angles of the display are comfortable, and the picture, as it should be IPS, does not fade under any slopes.

Looking at the display under the microscope you can make sure that it is an IPS-display. The subpixel structure is characteristic of this kind of matrix.

The maximum white brightness is 404 cd / m² when using a picture with a white background in the center and 379.5 cd / m² when using pictures that divide the screen equally into a white and black field.
The minimum white brightness is 0.92 cd / m² and 0.86 cd / m² (by analogy with the maximum white brightness).
The maximum brightness of black - 0,328 cd / m² or 0,300 cd / m²
Contrast (divide max. White by max. Black) - 1231: 1 or 1265: 1, depending on the maximum white and black color.
I am glad that when using different picturesThe difference in brightness is not as noticeable as on previous smartphones I tested (Bluboo D6 and Neffos C9). Maybe there are smartphones on which the readings even less diverge, but I have not yet met them.
The smartphone is far from a record, but comfortablemaximum brightness. Information on the sun remains readable. The minimum brightness even in complete darkness, there is a desire to slightly increase, which means that applications that darken the screen will not be needed.
The previous person who tested now is mine.the smartphone, for some reason, received a much lower maximum brightness - 280 cd / m², but if you take foreign reviews, they also indicate 400 cd / m² (, and even a larger figure - 440 cd came from browsers from the IXBT website / m² Yes, and I checked everything more than once.
The contrast is slightly higher than the standard values ​​for IPS-matrices (1000: 1).
The sRGB color gamut at the smartphone does not coincide with the standard sRGB triangle.
All points of gray are located in the radius DeltaE = 10, which means the absence of parasitic shades in gray.

The brightness graph slightly exceeds the reference values.

The color range varies from about 1.8 to 2.0.

The color chart gives almost perfect green and red values, but overestimated blue values.

The color temperature is around 6600K-6900K.

These tests were carried out atthe display settings of the “Standard” profile (contrast), while switching to the “Increased” profile caused all gray points to shift beyond the radius DeltaE = 10. That is, the gray color, in theory, becomes not quite gray.

In addition, in the settings there are three profiles withdifferent color tones, and also the user is given the opportunity to independently choose any shade with which the picture will be displayed on the display. It is a pity that the LED indicator can not be configured in this way ...

Multitouch is designed for ten touches, and duringThe multi-touch test finger zones do not merge with each other when they are next to each other on the screen. Since there are a lot of touches, problems never arise with the accuracy of clicks.
There is an oleophobic coating on the screen - likeI can judge it is of good quality. Fingerprints are rubbed off easily. During the use of the smartphone, I did not scratch the glass, which rarely happens. Therefore, I will assume that the screen is well protected.
I have no serious complaints about the display, as forbudget device it can be called at least good. However, the completeness of the description of the displays is still far from me to some professional reviewers.
7. Iron, operating system, software and sensors
The heart of the smartphone was the processor Helio A22, which never became widespread. As far as I know, now, in addition to Redmi 6A, only Elephone A5 lite and Vivo Y81i work on it.
The chipset is designed more for low cost devices,what its maximum supported display resolution says is 1600 x 720. The number of processor cores is 4, which is why A22 is often compared to Snapdragon 425, but MediaTek has all cores running at 2 GHz, versus 1.3 GHz for a Qualcomm solution. In addition, MediaTek tried to make the chipset up-to-date, which is expressed both in the supported technologies and in the 12-nanometer process technology. But the popularity of the chipset suggests that something is wrong with it, but what exactly, I will try to find out.
About the operating system. Since I have a Russian firmware, not a global one, I can’t download the new version of MIUI (ten) for the time being. Now I have installed MIUI stable, but you can flip to globalku, if there is a need. One of the drawbacks of the MIUI shell is the presence of a large number of advertisements - it can be seen in built-in applications, for example in a pre-installed browser, and users often complain that they see advertising offers when opening a curtain, on a lock screen, or in other scenarios for using a smartphone. However, on specialized forums it is easy to find instructions on how to turn off all unnecessary.

If you look at, you can read abouta lot of problems, the description of which exactly goes beyond one review, but in general I like MIUI, as I see one of the most functional shells.
After the first switch on the device is available 24.54GB of user memory (in the 32 GB version), which is excellent, especially considering the fact that the operating system has third-party pre-installed software.
Free RAM - about 900 MB, but in the tenth MIUI, as they say, 100 MB more free.
Among the pre-installed software there are not all the necessary applications like Joom and Yule, which, fortunately, are easily removed.

Now about the sensors.
Light sensor, with a sudden change of lighting,as if a bright lamp had been turned off sharply in front of the smartphone, it began to smoothly change the brightness level of the display after four and a half seconds, and the dimming process takes about 1.2 seconds.
The proximity sensor stably operates duringconversation. If you bring your finger to it at a distance of about 3 cm, the screen will already turn off and turn on when your finger is about 4 cm from the sensor.
The GPS Test app assesses the work of the compass as accurate. True, I do not know how reliable this information is.
Unlocking the face in my device becomesavailable only when the Taiwan region is set in the smartphone settings. It seems to concern only the Russian firmware. And why hide the functionality if it is fully supported by the processor? Well, okay, it was much more interesting for me to learn how the function works.
It turned out that onlyOne option is a face that not everyone will like. The unlock speed with sufficient light is 1.56 seconds, and the percentage of low light hits is very high (I have 9-10 attempts out of 10), considering that there is no infrared camera in the smartphone. In total darkness, it will be more difficult to unlock the device, you will have to set the display backlight at least about 60 percent (from a distance of half of the arm), but the greater the brightness, the higher the chance of successful unlocking.

It is worth considering the work and USB-OTG. As it turned out, even demanding current and voltage hard drives can be connected to the smartphone, among other gadgets in the form of flash drives, mice, etc. The maximum current issued by the smartphone was 1.38 A at a voltage of 4.72 V, which, as I understand it, is a good indicator.

However, when charging another smartphone from Redmi 6A, a lower current flows - 0.46 A. The charge graph does not change, regardless of how many percent of the charge remains at the Redmi 6A.

In one hour, Xiaomi gave up 25 percent of the charge, andNeffos C9 smartphone charged from 33 to 45%. The hero of the review was completely discharged in 3 hours 36 minutes (but here you can add about 5 minutes, since I spent a small part of the charge during various checks), and Neffos increased the charge percentage to 77.
MHL and ANT + support is missing.
8. Glitches and OS issues
There are certain oddities with games, but this will be information in the appropriate section.
Also a smartphone when solving certain tasksworks slowly, as, for example, when photographing. However, judging by the reviews, not everyone is concerned about the problem with the slow operation of the device, but, nevertheless, I will try to prove that the smartphone will inevitably be slowed down from time to time.
To confirm, it is enough to refer to the software that tracks such a phenomenon as throttling, which should be understood as a decrease in processor performance.

The screenshot above shows that performanceperiodically drops to 17.1 GIPS with an average of 38.4 GIPS. All processor cores at such times will work only at half the maximum frequency. I don’t think that the reason for this behavior is overheating, because even when disassembled, without heat dissipating elements, Redmi 6A does not heat very much, as you can see by looking at the “Heating” section in my review. Maybe something is wrong with the processor? Or with the firmware namudri?
Dr. applicationThe Web did not detect any viruses on the device, but Adguard software blocks a lot of requests originating from the pre-installed MIUI services. Rumor has it that a lot of different data is sent from a smartphone, but I don’t know how dangerous or safe it is for the user.

9. Communication
Single-band Wi-Fi is expected to catch the signal well for me.

In the smartphone there is a mode that allows you to work immediately two sim cards in 4G networks. This mode can be turned on or off as desired.
Loudness ringing dynamics at best I wouldcharacterized as average. If you put the smartphone on the wooden table with the speaker down, then from a distance of 50 cm. The volume will be 82.7 dBA. When the smartphone lay display down, the volume increased by 0.9 dBA, reaching 83.6 decibels. That is, do not say that the sound is very muffled.

But the most interesting thing is that the volume of the ringing speaker can be increased in the engineering menu.
If the standard indicator in the field denotingThe maximum volume level was 120, when increasing the number to 160, the volume will be 85.6 dBA from 50 cm. If the smartphone is lying so that the speaker is on top.
I want to note that theoretically increasingThe volume in the engineering menu can negatively affect the sound quality, and even damage the speaker. In any case, it will be problematic to make a loud enough sound, unless it makes sense to set melodies with a programmatically increased volume level on the bell.
But to the conversational dynamics I have no questions, but its volume can also be increased in the engineering menu. The speech of the interlocutor is in any case legible.
The power of the vibration is low and you can skip the challenge. I certainly hardly feel the work of the vibration motor (and not always) when the smartphone is in the pocket of jeans.

There are no complaints about the quality of the records.
10. Cameras and flash

The main camera, in my opinion, in automatic mode produces too saturated colors that do not seem realistic to me. However, some bright pictures will be to your taste. Here You can see my rather convenient comparison of the cameras of the Neffos C9 and Xiaomi Redmi 6A smartphones - you can decide for yourself which device takes better pictures.
What is striking is that Xiaomi’s main camerarelatively small viewing angle. On the other hand, Redmi 6A has better detailing if you look at cropping photos (an increase of 100%). Therefore, Xiaomi is clearly not the worst camera compared to other budget smartphones, I would even say that one of the best. With good lighting, you can count on decent pictures.
Even in the standard camera there is a considerable number of settings, including the manual shooting mode, implying the user changing various parameters, such as ISO, shutter speed, etc.

If I rather liked the photos, then withThere are problems with video recording. Even in the daytime, FPS drawdowns of up to 12 frames occur, and at night or just in the dark the frame rate drops to 1 per second. This is evidenced by the data that you can see in the picture below:

With the front camera just about everything. With its help, you can get good shots, although there is a feeling that there is always some improvement that blurs the face, even if everything is turned off in the settings. In the video there are exactly the same drawdown.

The flash as a flashlight produces 106 lux withdistances of 50 cm, and from 180 cm. - 5 lux. Flash indicators are good, it will be easy to highlight your way. However, the flash still does not replace a good bright flashlight.

11. Navigation
The GPS application Satelite claims that the smartphonecan work immediately with four types of satellite navigation systems. These are GPS, Galileo, GLONASS and BeiDou. The search for satellites is carried out quickly, and communication with them is not lost where there should be no problems with navigation (hello MT6580).

When walking, too, problems did not arise with the included SIM, and in flight mode.

When the smartphone is stationary,then the location on the map does not change, which is good when recording tracks. Therefore, given the good brightness of the screen and decent autonomy (ran a little ahead), the smartphone is very fit as a navigator.
12. Battery and running time
To test the smartphone batterywith electronic load (thanks to Kirich for the description of the method), I had to hook crocodiles directly to the train, which, by the way, indicated where + and -. I pasted the reverse side of the loop with the first stickers that I took from some of the parcels sent to me - this needs to be done so that nothing starts to short. In general, testing took place in this way:

Having discharged the battery in the smartphone before turning off the device, I connected the cable to the EBC-A10, holding the battery for about a minute under a load of 600 mAh or 0.2 C. As a result, I received a figure of 3.388 V.

Then I charged the battery completely (already via a smartphone). The charged battery was again connected to the load, gradually discharging the smartphone with the same current of 0.2 C. This is what I did:
1. Capacity used by the smartphone - 2652 mAh. These are data at a discharge to 3,39 Century.
2. When discharging to 3 V, another 207 mAh was spent.
3. Discharge to 2.8 V gave another 29 mAh.

Thus, the total battery capacityis 2888 mAh or 10.76 Wh. At the same time, the smartphone has been used periodically, but it has been used since the middle of August 2018, and survived by far more than one full discharge and charging. Therefore, we can conclude that the capacity of the new battery will be fair or almost fair.
From the current data it follows that the smartphone uses 91.8% of the battery capacity.
If we proceed from the inscriptions on the battery (see section "Interiors"), then the minimum capacity is 2900 mAh or 11.1 Wh.
Next, check the charging time of the smartphone in the off state:
30 minutes - 19%;
1 hour - 34%;
1 hour 30 minutes - 54%;
2 hours - 72%;
2 hours 30 minutes - 90%;
3 hours 1 minute - 100%.

Maximum current during charging: 1.06 A. Of course, there is no support for fast charging.

Detailed testing of the autonomy of my device has already been conducted, so I did not torment the smartphone a second time. The plate with the results you can see hereat the same time comparing autonomy with a large number of other smartphones.
It remains for me to complete only the synthetic tests for the full picture, and also try to leave the smartphone in standby mode for one day. What came of it, you can see below.
24 hours standby (with very rarescreen turns): spent 32 percent of the charge. This is a lot, and the graphs below show that the active mode worked for a long time. This will not always happen, but you need to be prepared for such surprises.

PC Mark with a recommended display brightness of 200 cd / m²: 7 hours 23 minutes.
It is a pity, of course, that the smartphone capacity3000 battery, not 4000 mAh, but a modern processor should help save energy. In fact, with moderate use, the smartphone may well work one day, which, unfortunately, is a good indicator for current devices.
Additionally save power will help power saving mode, which is available in the settings of the smartphone, and also ready to help come low minimum brightness.
13. Heating
The device does not heat up much, the heat is barelyIt is felt when you touch the upper part of the back surface of the smartphone with your fingers. Inside the device there are metal plates that probably dissipate heat, and on the back surface of the cover there is a heat-insulating material. Photos of all of the above can be viewed in the "Internals" section.
After half an hour of playing PUBG, the imager showed32 ° C, and the pyrometer gave out 33.7 ° C (in the photo below the laser point is directed to the most heated, according to the device location) at room temperature of 22.5 degrees Celsius.

And one more check. The device was not disassembled, and the temperature was measured after 25 minutes of playing in PUBG, plus another smartphone at that time was on charge.

14. Sound in headphones
The sound was tested using the RightMark Audio Analyzer program and the Sound BlasterX G5 sound card connected to the smartphone via a 3.5 mm cable. (without additional headphone connection).

Additional Information

When using the Audio-Technica headsetThe ath-ckx7is do not have to complain about the sound quality. Yes, and the RightMark Audio Analyzer data suggests that there are no obvious failures when testing all the parameters. Plus, the volume can be increased in the engineering menu, since initially the sound, in my opinion, is not loud enough.
Do not forget that in the smartphone,traditionally for MIUI, there is an equalizer and sound enhancers. I wondered how the RMAA program would react to the included “Improve Mi sound” function with the choice of Mi Earbuds headphones, and, admittedly, the results worsened, and most of all added harmonic distortion. Is it possible, is the setting really somehow tied to the headphone model? Or it’s nothing more than marketing.

15. Games, videos and more
In general, a smartphone with games is more friendly, especiallyon the background of devices with a Snapdragon 425 processor, or, say, working on MT6739. Even new games are launched, but it is worth noting that in the GTA games, sometimes the control buttons either disappeared or the dialogs stopped displaying during video inputs. It seems that the main character is moving, but the action of the storyline stops, because of which you have to restart the game or just load it from a previously saved slot. This all happens when performing missions - it is possible that the GTA is not very well optimized for a new exotic processor, or the reasons for something else.
Sometimes drawdowns to 0 frames unexpectedly occur,that is, games for a short period of time freeze. In general, everything is not as good as it might seem to an ordinary user.

GTA: VC: comfortable 40 FPS with rare drawdowns up to 28 frames per second and much rarer 15-18 frames.
Asphalt 8: An average of 23 frames per second with drawdowns of up to 16 FPS on the maximum graph.

But I either didn’t have enough strength, or experience, or there were some other reasons, but it can be concluded that the cover of the Redmi 6A is quite tight.
And one of the comments to me helped this videoexplaining what's bestpick up the cover with the pick in the place where the SIM card slots are located. Of course, you should first pull out the trays. As it turned out, the plastic in the specified place bends well and allows you to quickly release the cover from the clips.

Are there any good competitors in Xiaomi in the budget segment? Well, except for models that are forced to be sold at a reduced price? Although the sale can still be found Redmi 5A and even 4A.
