Where to get copper plates for cooling the laptop and how to apply thermal grease

Noticed that my ThinkPad X220 started significantlybask. I decided to make him preventive maintenance of the cooling system. After studying the issue, it turned out that for the removal of heat, a hub made of heat-conducting rubber was installed on the hub and it must be replaced in a good way, because over time it loses its properties. A small sheet of this rubber, 1 mm thick. costs about 500 - 600 rubles. Upon reflection, I decided to install a copper plate instead of heat-conducting rubber, especially since the cost of a set of plates of different thicknesses is about 300 rubles.

I liked the thermal grease. It is moderately thick, the structure is finely dispersed, the crystal does not scratch.

I have a laptop in 2011 and, as I understand it, inthe process of disassembling it, this is his first so The cooling system tightly stuck to the processor. You can use a degreaser to remove it. We collect it into the syringe and carefully spill the gap between the processor and the cooling system around the perimeter. After that, the SB is removed without problems!
The remnants of the old thermal paste are removed using the same degreaser and a cotton pad.
Heat-conducting rubber is removed without any problems.
Now you need to choose the right thicknessplates for the hub. The selection procedure is as follows, take the plate, set it on the hub and collect the CO. We try to gently shake the plate, if it moves freely, then take the next one and so on, until the plate can be moved only with a little effort. The main thing here is not to overdo it, since excessive thickness will lead to a skew of CO and, as a result, heat transfer will deteriorate. After the required plate thickness is determined, it is necessary to check the uniformity of the passage of the CO heat exchangers and the crystals of the processor and the hub. To do this, we again disassemble the CO and apply a small drop of thermal paste to the center of the crystal of the processor and the hub. We install a plate on the hub and on top we also apply a drop of paste. Re-assemble and disassemble the CO. If, on the surface of the crystal, a round translucent spot has formed, then this will indicate a dense and uniform adherence of the cooling system to the surface. Otherwise, repeat the procedure for selecting the thickness of the plate again.
Now let's proceed to the final assembly.
Thermal grease is convenient to apply with your finger wrapped in packaging film.

As for me, this is the most optimal way. A thick layer is not needed here!

Before installing the plate, just in case, isolate the protruding components on the hub with kapton tape.

In this case, the plate must be installed with a slight offset, so that when installing the CO it does not warp.

Apply thermal grease on the back.

The old tape on the radiator, used to seal it, has dried out. You can replace it with aluminum tape.

We finally install the cooling system and assemble the laptop.
