Almost exactly a year ago I published a debut reviewmodels from an unknown then manufacturer under the name Vernee. You can say a lot, blame for the shortcomings, but in any case, the Thor model that they released first turned out to be not so bad in fact, and one of the "first-born" has been under my supervision for more than a year.
In general, today I’ll talk about the continuation of the Thor line, and also show and compare it with the previous model, in places “face to face”. And of course there will be a mandatory disassembly.

As you can see, the characteristics are almost completelyrepeat the previous model, in this case, the company for some reason decided to use the same SoC MTK6753 and the same amount of RAM / flash, apparently there were reasons for that.
But there are differences, and they begin, asoddly off the packaging. In this case, the box is cardinally white, not black. By the way, brief specifications are indicated on the package, but my eyes are hooked on the camera resolution, 13mp, and below it is really 8mp
But the advertisement tells us how everything is new and advanced, in fact we will check this in the review.

The instruction is partially translated into Russian, but since it is impossible to explain how to use a modern telephone in a couple of lines, the meaning is more superficial.
They also gave an incomprehensible piece of paper, in theory, for more convenient receiving software updates.
1. Ejector, or "clip". Even when I saw this phone before ordering, and also watched the video on the manufacturer’s website, I was trying to understand whether the SIM card slot is combined or the cards are placed inside the device. But in advertising somehow this moment was gallantly bypassed, and everywhere they try to show the smartphone so that the left side is not visible. But when he saw the clip already at the unpacking stage, everything became clear, but more on that later.
2. MicroUSB-USB cable, cable as cable, length about 70cm, soft, neat.
3, 4. Charger. I remember trying to implement the first version of the device with the function of accelerated charging, but alas, "I could not, I could not." This time, everything is different and the manufacturer initially gives a charger with the Quick Charge function, although the maximum voltage is limited to 9 volts, although the charger itself can do up to 12.
As last time, the phone is made in two colors, black and gray. The black version came to me, although probably gray will look more interesting, but it is more for everybody.
Two films are glued on the screen, the main one and the transport one.
All faces of the smartphone are busy with something:
1. On the right are the volume and power buttons.
2. On the left is a slot for SIM cards and a memory card, as well as a button to turn on the power saving mode.
3. The bottom has a microphone hole and a charger connector. In my opinion, the manufacturer did the right thing by using microUSB rather than the new-fangled USB type-C. You can argue with this, of course, but so far microUSB is much more widespread.
4. At the top there is only a headset jack.
1. Below are three touch buttons, again, plus for not making the on-screen buttons.
2. At the top there is an event indicator (it happened, it was so lacking in the previous version), a proximity sensor, a spoken speaker covered by a fairly solid mesh and a front camera with a resolution of 2 megapixels (interpolation up to 5mp).
And here is the stumbling block of many modernsmartphones, a combined slot for SIM cards and a memory card. But here I would give the manufacturer a minus, maybe he just couldn’t push the cards inside, but why use the slot for NanoSIM and why microSIM couldn’t get by ... In general, for the test I had to buy another starter pack and cut the card to this size, so at home only mini and micro SIM cards.
A transport film is also pasted on the back, on which a brief instruction and the purpose of the controls and connectors are applied.
The back cover is partially plastic (top and bottom), partially brushed aluminum, it looks neat, but prints will be visible.
Below is the main speaker, closedfine protective net. To make the sound heard when the device is on the table, the manufacturer made a pair of tabs on the left and right, on which the smartphone rests.
There were no complaints about the sound, at least in the midrange and treble part of the sound range, low frequencies are not enough, but this is the trouble of most devices.
The rear camera is decorated somewhat unusual and at the same time it’s even familiar with something, but I can’t remember what.
The part with the camera and flash is highlighted in a separateprotruding block, while in appearance it looks like a panel with a solar battery. By the way, while I was watching, an idea came to my mind, because you can make part of the back panel in the form of solar panels and get even more battery life
A little lower placed a fingerprint sensor. In the first Torah, I had complaints about him, but the manufacturer after that significantly improved its work.
The sensor not only started working instantlywithout "dancing with a tambourine", it also does this for any position of the applied finger. Those. you don’t have to put your finger in exactly the same position as you applied it during training, but at least turn the phone 180 degrees. This means that you can take the device upside down, put your finger on the sensor and the phone will also quickly unlock as in the normal position.
Somehow they wrote to me that photos in “home” conditions are not very successful, but not in terms of beauty, but in terms of distinguishability of details, and I did a small “photo session” in natural light.
I don’t see any point in commenting, because it’s just a photo.

And of course, face-to-face comparison of the first and second versions.
But first, a few words about this phone. A year later, I can say that everything works exactly the same as it worked at the time of writing the review. At one time, there were some problems with connecting to my access point, but what to sin in this case, I find it difficult to answer.
All this time, the smartphone works with the same firmware as it was a year ago.
The only thing is that I rubbed a little over the year, but I would not say that much, however you will see it in the photo.
The first thing that catches your eye is the shape of the case. Although it would be fairer to say that I paid attention to this even earlier when I compared it with my Doogee X5 max.
The new Tor is a bit narrower and at the same time as much longer, the difference is literally a couple of millimeters, but when using it it is very noticeable.
I conducted a small quick survey among those whoheld this smartphone in his hands, about half of this version of the case (already longer) liked more, the second half, on the contrary, liked the old design more. If my opinion interests me, then I liked the new version of the case more.
Also, the new device is a little "fat", ratherall this is due to the increased battery capacity. And of course, they changed the shape of the frame of the case, in the first Torah it was with noticeably rounded corners and in general it looks more like a piece of soap, in the new one they decided to give “sharpness”, but as they say - East Design is a delicate matter.
I must note a barely noticeable marking of the touch buttons, with the new version they are barely noticeable, and this is not a feature of the photo, but it really is. There is no backlight.
But when I held both of them in my hands at the same time, I immediately noted the more pleasant material of the back cover exactly at the first Thor, I like the soft-touch coating more, but again, not for everybody.

In addition to changing the shape and size of the case, the phone gained a little weight, the new model is about 20 grams heavier.
Although if you compare it with my Doogee X5 max, and more precisely with its 188 grams of "live weight", then 165 new ones do not look so scary.
There are no complaints about the colors and image quality in general, colorfully, excellent viewing angles, however, the first Thor in this regard also was all right.
1. Even when looking diagonally, the image looks pretty good, the backlight is noticeable, but less than with other devices.
2. Comparison of the first and second Torah.
I also compared the image with external illumination, Thor E is clearly better in black than my Doogee.
The explanation was found very quickly, the screen is possibleslightly improved, but simultaneously diminished the brightness of the backlight, compared with the previous version and my smartphone, the new Thor (in the center) has a less bright image.
This is better noticeable in this photo, with both devices the brightness is set to the maximum.
With an external examination, that’s probably all, and somehow it turned out to be very cumbersome, I’ll proceed to the examination of the insides.
The smartphone opens quite simply, a sharp plastic card in a line between the back cover and the frame of the screen, after which a passage along the perimeter.
Naturally, do not forget to remove the SIM card slot.

Composite back cover, part plastic, partmetal. Interestingly, I found only one antenna inside, below, although it usually costs two. in this case, the back cover is connected to the telephone chassis via spring-loaded contacts (yellow pins in the photo).

but at the same time inside there is room for quitemassive aluminum chassis, which is pretty good. In my opinion, the developers tried hard enough to get a large battery capacity and at the same time light weight, but they did not harm the structural strength. Although the metal back cover could be made a little thicker.
The main board of the phone, everywhere connectors andsoldered covers on individual nodes. Moreover, some connectors are simultaneously covered by additional metal clips, among Chinese devices I saw this only once, in the Leagoo T1 Plus smartphone.
The housing cover was most likely intended either for a device with two cameras, or with an additional rear sensor, since there is a hole in the plastic on the left.
There is a white sticker on the board in this place, I even dismantled the smartphone because of it, but it's just a sticker, there is nothing under it.
By the way about the camera, a big plus to the manufacturerbecause he did not begin to weigh his product with a second camera, as other manufacturers are trying to do. There is only one camera, but of the minuses I’ll note only one backlight LED, now a combination of two LEDs, warm and cold light, is more often used.
Below is a plastic cover and another board on which the microphone, connector, and antenna contacts are located. The cover is screwed onto 6 screws, obviously decided to play it safe.
But actually the main reason for the autopsythere was a measurement of the battery’s capacity, especially since due to the charging circuitry, an attempt to measure the capacity of this unit with the help of “doctors” is doomed to failure in advance.
We connect the battery to the electronic load and run the test.
This smartphone has some new typebattery, with a voltage of 3.85 Volts, and not 3.6 / 3.7 / 3.8 like those that I saw before. Actually for this I slightly changed the test methodology, first charging the battery in the smartphone.
After that, I discharged it to 2.8 Volts with marks at 3.0 and 3.2 Volts.
As a result, I received 4643mAh of total capacity. The discharge current was 2 amperes.
Since I ended up disassembling the phone a second time,I decided to check the capacity again, likewise charging first at 100% with the built-in charger, and then discharging, but with “stops” at 3.0 and 3.15 Volts. The fact is that most often phones turn off precisely at 3.15 Volts (under load), as a result I got almost the same as last time, 4630mAh.
Last time, the capacity was almost identical.claimed (about 2800mAh), this time I “missed” almost 400mAh, or about 8%, although I even carried out two measurements and got an identical result, so the error is practically excluded.
With the hardware, everything is clear, let's move on to the software.
The first time you went through the standard pointspre-configuration, and then I got to the “desktop”. Outwardly, everything is neat and even nice, until I went to the program menu. The menu, very familiar to me from the Cubot smartphone reviews, is just one to one. Strange, very strange, despite the fact that the first version had a very neat menu of programs, I even liked it, modestly and beautifully. But in this case, I did not understand the developers.
Separately preinstalled programs I think notit’s necessary to describe, they are more than familiar to most users of modern Android devices, these are Google applications, a browser, Gallery (not very convenient), and of course YouTube. By the way, YouTube here works just fine, 5 points!
As I said at the very beginning, both phones are assembled on the basis of the same SoC (processor), which means that the test results will be almost identical, therefore I will be brief in terms of software, excuse me.
Android version 7.0 was originally installed, although they have put 7.1 for a long time, at least in TV boxes.
At first, the phone didn’t see any updates, but just a couple of hours later it notified me that there is a new version, because all the tests went on with the already updated software.
The phone has 16 GB of flash memory, fromof which a little more than 10 are available to the user and about 200 MB are pre-installed programs. If the first Torah of these same 16 GB was enough, which is called “behind the eyes”, then in this case, in my opinion, is not enough. Since the card slot is combined, you will either have to put up with a 16GB flash, or with one SIM card and 32 or 64GB would not be superfluous.
The smartphone menu has a lot of differentsettings that allow you to configure the device in a way convenient for the user, it is clear that this is a merit of Android, not developers, but still really convenient.
It is also possible to control not only gestures, for example, I liked the function of turning on the flashlight by drawing the letter V, but also turning off the sound when an incoming call by turning the phone over
Like last time, the eight-coreMTK6753 processor, it’s clear that it’s time to deliver something more powerful, but by and large in real life its performance is more than enough. I already wrote that the first Thor has been under observation for more than a year and so far everything has been working smoothly and beautifully, although there are many applications installed. In part, the situation is saved by 3GB of RAM and a 720p display.
Because yes, the processor is a bit old, and not everyone loves the products of this company, but in reality it is enough to solve the vast majority of problems.
Root unfortunately there is no access, I could not even get into the engineering menu, where I wanted to see a list of open GSM bands.

As I wrote at the very beginning, though the cameradefined as 13mp, but even the manufacturer himself writes that it’s real 8. The second camera has similar capabilities, with the exception of flash and resolution of 2mp (5 with interpolation).
In search of differences and improvements, I got to the sensors. And there are changes, added a magnetic field sensor.
The touchscreen has the same 5 points of contact as the first Torus. I came across at least one smartphone with ten points of contact, but as for me, this is already superfluous.
And here are the tests.
AnTuTu version 5 issued 34695 points against 33866 in the "old man".
Version 6 also showed slightly greater performance at 37,750 compared to 37,050 from the previous one.
The SD card in the test was used differently, so I won’t compare it, but I’ll just say that reading at 40MB / s is quite good.
But the built-in flash this time is slower, 116/49 versus 165/83 in the first Thor.
RAM is also slower, 3217 vs 3829.
I did not conduct Geekbench tests on the previous version, and I don’t think it makes sense to do this, since the results are approximately predictable.
Cinebench and 3Dmark
4379/210 for Thor E and 4095/6679 for Thor. The result in 3Dmark is very different in view of the different versions of the benchmark.

Here the results are as follows - 54.6 / 45.8 in the new and 54.7 / 43.4 in the previous one. The difference is rather within the margin of error.
I have been conducting this test not so long ago, because there will be no comparisons. Although it’s probably not so, there will be no comparisons with other smartphones, because I’ll still compare, but later
The phone holds communication very well, and in addition a 5 GHz band appeared, which was not the case with the previous version.
I will not paint all the measurements, I’ll just say thatthe maximum distance of 12 m with several load-bearing walls was about 2 Mbps in both ranges, in the room adjacent to the router it was 35/60 (2.4 / 5 GHz), the maximum was 47/103 Mbps, respectively.
Since this unit is positioned as a "long-playing", i.e. With a large margin of autonomy, then naturally I devoted most of my time to working time tests.
But for starters, I was curious to see whatshows the built-in voltage meter on the battery. Judging by the readings of the CPU-Z, the battery charges up to 4.388 Volts, with a real measurement I got about 4.35 Volts.
Now about autonomy. The Geekbench test gave out 8 hours, almost a minute per minute. For some reason, after the automatic shutdown, the program did not save the last value, so I had to run the test a second time to fix the shutdown time.
The discharge schedule is somewhat unusual, first at half an hour the level is at around 100% and only then it starts to fall, then it falls linearly until it completely turns off.
In general, in this regard, the tests really took a lot of time, each test took many hours, then again the charge and again the test ...
Along the way, the operating time was checked atplaying FullHD video, which amounted to more than 9 hours. In the screenshot, the time is slightly less, since I had to leave and then the phone turned off by itself, as far as I know, closer to 12.00.
As well as playing videos on YouTube. In all tests, there was a maximum screen brightness.
It came out almost 8h 30 minutes.
As was known from handouts andvideo, there is a function in the phone called E-ink, it is turned on by clicking on the small button on the left. The button is almost recessed into the case and made so that accidentally pressing it is quite problematic.
Outwardly, the result really looks like an e-book screen, a black and white image, while not very high brightness.
However, a low brightness is shown only with bright external illumination, in normal mode everything is pretty well visible.
The image resembles a shutdown session in Windows XP when, after pressing the shutdown button, the image turns black and white.
In the process of preparing the review, I wanted todemonstrate all this in the form of screenshots, but it turned out that the screenshots are obtained in color, although I always believed that the "capture" of the image comes from the video card buffer and there it should already be exactly black and white.
Although I moved away from the topic. In E-ink mode, the phone’s functions are pretty much cut down, initially three pre-installed programs are given and some more can be added from the list of installed programs.
Settings allow you only to change the brightness, volume and delete an already added program from the menu list.
I was curious about how to increase battery life.
1. In this mode, the image is black and white, perhaps this reduces consumption
2. The brightness of the backlight is reduced, a little, but you can profit.
3. For the sake of the experiment, I conducted a performance test and found out that productivity was simultaneously reduced. Above, I conducted this test in normal mode and there was a result of 3264 points, in economy mode it turned out a little less - 2553.
In addition to the actual advertising of the smartphone, the manufacturer pushed the video about the quick charge function. I was very interested in it and I decided to check if everything is so beautiful.
To begin with, the manufacturer claims that the device supports fast charge at a voltage of 9 volts and a current of 2 amperes.
1, 2. In reality, the charge current is about 1.5 Amperes, but yes, at a voltage of 9 volts. In the photo, the result of charging from scratch in 20 and 40 minutes.
3, 4. But we decided to check the advertising statement. If you carefully watch the video, you can see that the person came to eat and in 40 minutes fully charged the smartphone from 48% to 100%. I will omit the moment that the guy ate 40 minutes, during which time I would probably have time to eat, smoke and get hungry again
In general, the result, as they say - on the face, 40 minutes, start at 48%, finish at 84%. The truth of the brand stand as in the video I did not have, maybe this is the reason?
5. Up to 100%, the smartphone charges after another 40 minutes, totaling 2 hours 22 minutes.
6. But even after the inscription is displayed - the charge is over, the process still continues slowly, though already at a voltage of 5 Volts and completely ends in 8 minutes.
Total full charge takes 2.20-2.30. On the one hand, given the capacity of the battery, it’s pretty quick, but on the other, a little slower than the manufacturer claims, well, or a marketer. By the way, the indicator of events is visible on the first and last photo.
In this case, the charge power is not 18 watts (9x2), but only 13.5 (9x1.5), which is slightly more than 10 (5x2). The only advantage is that the cable quality is less affected.
The phone supports work with both GPS and Glonass satellites, which should have a positive effect on the quality of navigation. The previous version only supported GPS.
When you try to connect, a cold start takes a lot of time, about two or three minutes to jump, the next launches are much faster.
To be honest, the work of navigation was also in the pastmodels at a fairly high level, this was manifested both in the number of satellites found and in the evenness of the line when recording the traffic log. Here the picture is almost one-on-one, basically the accuracy of binding to the map was very high, although spontaneous “jumps” sometimes appeared.
Below is the track that I recorded for the experiment. The phone was in my shirt pocket with a screen from me, the gripe was caused only by the place shown at the top of the last screenshot, otherwise there are no questions.
And finally, what I like the previousThor model, this is a camera. In all, well, or almost all of my smartphone reviews, I compared their cameras to Thor's camera, and I don’t remember the case that Thor lost to them.
In this case, a rear camera with a resolution of 8 (13) megapixels and an aperture of f / 2.4 is installed, and a quick focus function is also announced.
The previous model had basically the same characteristics, with the exception of one significant point, the aperture there was f / 2.0, and not f / 2.4.

All pictures were taken at approximately 19.20-20.40, i.e. already in the evening light.
A comparison was also made of two models, if originals are needed, I can try to throw a disk on Yandex, although there have been difficulties with this lately.
Thor vs. Thor E
Along the way, I decided to conduct an extended test, especially since I already conducted a similar test with cameras.
Extra camera test.
Test conditions - artificial lighting,the distance from the camera to the wall is 2 meters. Here I’ll make a short remark, after the “photo shoot” I noticed that the viewing angle of the cameras is slightly different, in the new version it is 66.5 degrees, and in the old version 62.5, it would be more correct to remove the first Thor from the wall 2 meters, and about 2m 18cm. But since the phone is already a year old, we’ll give it a small head start, I think it will be fair.
The result showed that just with clarity, everythingOK, I would even say that the new version has it a little higher, especially considering the different focal lengths of the lens. But with photosensitivity, the result is worse, and noticeably. Where the first Thor still takes off quite normally, the new one is already starting to go into noise. However, this is due to the fact that the first Thor has a camera aperture of 2.0, and the new 2.4. Alas, this affects the result.
1. All default settings. Exposure 1/33, ISO 213.
2. Forcedly changed the white balance to “incandescent lamp” and ISO to 100. Exposure was 1/13.
3. Manual BB, flash - automatic, shutter speed 1/30, ISO 154.
4. And this is the first Thor. Everything is on the machine, only I had to force the flash to turn off. Exposure 1/17, ISO 177.
The first Thor tried to turn on the flash, albeit withoutShe took a good photo. At the same time, the new one did the opposite, he turned on the flash only when I manually selected ISO-100. I tried to turn on the maximum power, but in this mode, he just lit up the photo, since the wallpaper reflects light well.
When checking the white balance, I took two photos,on the left on a fully automatic machine, on the right with a preliminary tap on the center of the screen. In this mode, the camera forcibly focuses on the selected area, but the image simultaneously becomes darker. It appears in almost all situations, even a white sheet, even just a photo on the street.
I didn’t notice any problems with the macro photo, a crop of a picture of a paper sheet from the example above. The minimum distance at which normal focusing occurs is 30mm.
"Knocked" on the engineering menu, so now I can lay out a list of supported ranges.
Finally, just a photo "in the interior"
Now I’ll try to summarize the results of tests and inspection.
To begin with, what is positive has appeared in the new model:

The rest, including productivity, remained at the same level. No, perhaps the fingerprint sensor was “finished”, now it works dramatically better than the previous model.
After some time using the device, Iwould say that I liked him more than not. Of course, in fact, it turned out that the quick charge function is not so fast, and the voluminous battery is not so voluminous. But on the other hand, the operating time has become noticeably longer and it really feels. Of course, you can say that devices with a more capacious battery have appeared on the market, but so far I have not seen any real capacity tests, and you can write anything, as you have seen.
The device works nicely, it has never beenhe "thought" or paused, everything is clear and beautiful. Therefore, there are no questions to the software at all. But if you have two SIM cards, then you have to limit yourself to the built-in 16 GB flash memory, in my opinion it was worth expanding them to at least 32.
The camera generally shoots relatively well,especially at close range, and indeed there weren’t any complaints at all, but so far the first Thor’s camera still has the best that I have seen among phones from Chinese manufacturers. But at the same time, I am glad that the developers of the new product did not begin to sculpt a second camera into it, thereby trying to “improve” the characteristics.
What would I choose from these two models? It’s hard to say that everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. For the new, I like the design (probably in the first place), improvements in the form of a capacious battery (in the second), fast charging, Glonass support, and the old one has a better camera and the lack of a combined slot. But in any case, I am visited by thoughts to put my Doogee X5 max on the shelf and use the new Thor.
